Calcium Chloride Dihydrate is a white deliquescent compound which is commonly used as a reagent in biochemistry. Calcium plays important roles in many biological processes, including signal transduction, muscle contraction, maintenance of cell membranes and cell wall stability. Calcium chloride is a soluble compound that can serve as a source of calcium ions in a solution. The compound can be useful for displacing ions from solution; for example, phosphate may be displaced from solution by calcium.

EDTA, disodium salt, dihydrate, for molecular biology is extensively used as a chelator of divalent cations such as Ca2+. EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent, a general chemical, and a sequestrant. In molecular biology applications, addition of EDTA minimizes the impact of metal ion contaminants. Also used to facilitate enzymatic reactions that could be inhibited by heavy metal traces. It also inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, which require divalent cations for activity. EDTA, disodium salt, dihydrate, for molecular biology is an inhibitor of Calpain.

Urea can be used as a detergent, similar to guanidine hydrochloride (sc-202637), to denature proteins at high concentrations, or in cell culture to increase the osmolarity. Transformed microorganisms often produce inclusion bodies, which are insoluble, inactive bodies, that form during recombinant protein production. These inclusion bodies can be denatured with urea or guanidine hydrochloride. The compound prefers to interacts with non-polar and aromatic sides and can be used in polyacrylamide gels containing urea to fractionate low molecular weight DNA or RNA.

Sodium bicarbonate is a commonly used laboratory chemical. The compound can react with both acids and bases, therefore it can be used as a neutralizer. When reacting with bases the compound forms carbonates. Sodium bicarbonate may be used to remove or wash acidic impurities from a crude liquid to yield a purer sample. Sodium bicarbonate reacts with the carboxyl groups to give a fast-forming and effervescent CO2 formation which has been used to test for the presence of carboxylic groups in proteins. Sodium bicarbonate has been observed to significantly decrease serum potassium levels as well as increase blood pH and bicarbonate concentration. The compound has been recorded to decrease the duration of peripheral nerve block in rats when added to Lidocaine.
