EDTA, disodium salt, dihydrate, for molecular biology is extensively used as a chelator of divalent cations such as Ca2+. EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent, a general chemical, and a sequestrant. In molecular biology applications, addition of EDTA minimizes the impact of metal ion contaminants. Also used to facilitate enzymatic reactions that could be inhibited by heavy metal traces. It also inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, which require divalent cations for activity. EDTA, disodium salt, dihydrate, for molecular biology is an inhibitor of Calpain.

Potassium nitrate is a naturally occurring mineral source of nitrogen. In plants, this compound has been tested to alleviate NaCl stress symptoms. Mechanistic studies suggest that this may be achieved through reduction of electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde and soluble sugar contents and improving the activities of antioxidant enzymes.

Sodium bicarbonate is a commonly used laboratory chemical. The compound can react with both acids and bases, therefore it can be used as a neutralizer. When reacting with bases the compound forms carbonates. Sodium bicarbonate may be used to remove or wash acidic impurities from a crude liquid to yield a purer sample. Sodium bicarbonate reacts with the carboxyl groups to give a fast-forming and effervescent CO2 formation which has been used to test for the presence of carboxylic groups in proteins. Sodium bicarbonate has been observed to significantly decrease serum potassium levels as well as increase blood pH and bicarbonate concentration. The compound has been recorded to decrease the duration of peripheral nerve block in rats when added to Lidocaine.

Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is widely used in biochemistry and molecular biology applications. Sodium Chloride is found in nature, in all body tissue, and is considered an essential nutrient. Sodium Chloride is used in a wide variety of biochemical applications including creating density gradients, regulating biological functions, and as a diluent to increase ionic strength in buffers or culture media. Sodium Chloride is a component of phosphate buffered saline (PBS)  and SSC buffer. Sodium Chloride has also been used for precipitation of DNA from SDS-containing samples and in the removal of small nucleic acid fragments from plasmid DNA preparations. The use of Sodium Chloride for isolation of DNA from mammalian cells has been described. Recent studies provide evidence that a high amount of Sodium Chloride reduces production of nitric oxide. Sodium Chloride is also known as table salt, and Halite.
